about

These songs were recorded in the front bedroom of the ground floor of 150 College Street in Peterborough, at the end of the 1991-1992 school year. They feature Dave Tough on acoustic guitar and vocals singing into the condenser microphone of portable a radio-cassette player of a type that was popular in the 1980s. With the exception of "Sandy," all the songs date from the 1991-1992 school year (my flunk-out first year at Trent University), and were written alongside the material that ended up on "Ugly" a year later. Beyond the obvious point that the recording on "Ugly" has an elaborate synthesizer introduction and other added instrumentation, "Song From the Walls of a Scotch Sanitarium" is a different version from the one that appears on "Ugly": the second chord is a G, not an E7, and the last few lines are completely different. "Your World Now" and "I Don't Even Like Myself" were never performed.
